About

summer 2010 092This blog is inspired by my dog Buzbuz who tries so hard – harder than any dog I’ve ever known – to communicate with me.

Several times a day she comes and finds me, sits as close to me as she can possibly get, makes full-on eye contact, and then proceeds to make a lengthy series of noises (part growl, part breathy sigh) that can only be described as off-loading. She’s come to tell me something important, something she really needs to get off her chest, and the fact that I can’t understand must be as frustrating for her as it is to me. No other dog I’ve had the privilege of caring for has ever done anything similar to these ‘chats’.

No other dog has been so persistent in getting me to listen. Her mother, a tiny half-Papillon, half-mystery called Cinderella, has taught her a number of unusual habits, including peeing with a back leg held forward and aloft (salute-style), and eating kibble from the rug rather than the dish I serve it in, but the conversational urges are Buzbuz’ alone.

Working from home as a freelance journalist can be a bit lonely at times and having a small and furry chatterbox at my feet makes for a much happier work environment, even if I have no idea what she’s talking about.

I hope this blog comes close to what she wants to say.

  1. What a wonderful idea for a blog! I can’t wait to hear more about what’s going on in Buzbuz’ busy brain and her observations about life with Deana!
